What is SPC?

SPC stands for Statistical Process Control. It was developed by Dr. Walter A. Shewhart in 1920 in Bell Lab. Statistical process control is a method of monitoring, and it helps in detecting changes in processes. It uses an advanced form of Time Series plots. It provides an easy method of decision making, if a process has changed or if the process is in control.

In a simple way, we can say that SPC is a medium of understanding if the process is stable and in control. The basic principle of SPC is to reduce variations, which is the main cause of wastage, rejection, customer dissatisfaction, and unrecoverable costs. Variation can not be eliminated, only we can minimize this by using SPC.

What are the SPC tools?

Statistical process control (SPC) is achieved by the use of statistical techniques to control a process or production method.

SPC tools and procedures are used to help you discover the process behavior, identifying issues in internal systems, and find the solution for production issues.

What are the 7 Statistical tools?

Statistical Process Control have seven basic tools which helps in solving quality issues through data collection, analyzing data ,identification of root cause and measuring results.

Cause and Effect Diagram

It is also called as fish-bone diagram and Ishikawa diagram. It identifies major causes and breaks them down into sub-cause and further sub-division(if any).It helps in identifying various causes affecting a process and grouping a common understanding of a problem.

Flow Chart

It is commonly called as stratification .It is a type of diagram that represents a process step by step with the help of various kind of box shapes and connecting these with arrow.

Pareto Analysis

A bar chart that helps to prioritize actions by arranging elements in descending order of occurrence.

Control Chat

It is a line graph used to display variation on time ordered interval. A center-line and control limits are placed on the graph to help analyze the pattern of the data.

Scatter Diagram

It is a tool used to study the possible relationship between two variables. If the data points are scattered very close to a trend, it shows string relationship otherwise it is weak relationship.

Histogram

It displays the variation within the process, also called a frequency distribution because the frequency of occurrence of any given value is represented by the height of the bars.

What is Cp and Cpk in SPC?

Cp is used to calculate how consistent is the process around your average performance.

Cpk, the ΓÇÿkΓÇÖ is for ΓÇÿcentralizing factor.ΓÇÖ The index takes into consideration the fact that your data is maybe not centered. Thus with the calculation of Cpk we can be assured enough if a process is capable of doing in future while remaining in a state of statistical control.

What is difference between Cp, Cpk and Pp, Ppk?

Cp and Cpk stands for Process Capability and Process Capability Index.

Generally, we use Cp, and Cpk when a process is under statistical control. This often happens when the process is fully grown stage. Process capability uses the process standard deviation (sigma) value calculated from either the Moving Range.

Pp and Ppk stands for Process Performance and Process Performance Index.

Generally, we use this when a process is new and we have a very limited data to determine if it is under statistical control. We take large samples from the process to calculate for variation. Process Performance generally uses sample standard deviation (sigma) in its calculation.
